Moroccan Sahara.. Mali reaffirms its position and supports autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty

Morocco – The Republic of Mali reiterated, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, its position in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its Sahara, reaffirming its adherence to the position announced by the Malian government last April regarding its support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a framework for settling the dispute over the Sahara.

The reaffirmation was made by Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdoulaye Diop following talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Diop explained that his country reaffirmed the importance of the statement issued by the Malian government on April 10, 2026, through which Bamako expressed its support for the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco, considering it, according to the announced Malian position, “the only serious and credible basis” for settling the dispute, while regarding genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a realistic solution.

The Malian foreign minister also announced his country’s support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, describing it as an “important step” in the search for a final solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara. He said Mali hoped that the current session of the United Nations General Assembly would contribute to moving from the initiative to the stage of translating it into concrete action and implementation.

In the same context, Diop stressed that relations between Mali and Morocco are based, according to his statement, on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries, while highlighting the importance of the relations between Rabat and Bamako at the economic, historical, commercial and human levels.

The Malian minister also referred to the latest session of the Joint Cooperation Commission between the two countries, held in Bamako last July, considering that it laid the foundations for strengthening bilateral cooperation in a number of areas, within what he described as a spirit of South-South cooperation.

The reaffirmation of Mali’s position comes at a time when the Sahara issue is witnessing continued diplomatic activity on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, as Rabat continues consultations with a number of countries regarding the autonomy proposal and the UN-led process for settling the dispute.

The position expressed by the Malian foreign minister confirms the continuation of Bamako’s position announced since April 2026, with its reaffirmation of support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal and respect for Morocco’s territorial integrity, alongside efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Sahara marocain..
