Moroccan veteran artist Safia Zayani passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the age of 91, at Moulay Youssef Hospital in Rabat, after a long artistic career that left a lasting mark on Morocco’s cultural and artistic scene.
The news of her passing was confirmed by actor Abdelkabir Rakkakna in a statement to SNRTnews, noting that the late artist had been suffering from health complications, a loss that has deeply saddened the artistic community and her many admirers.
Safia Zayani is considered one of the founding pioneers of acting in Morocco and among the first women to professionally pursue theater and performance. Her career began in the 1950s through theatrical competitions organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, before joining the National School of Theater in 1960.
In 1962, she became a professional actress with the National Theater Troupe, and in 1967 she joined the National Radio Troupe, participating in numerous radio and television productions. In cinema, she appeared in works by director Jilali Ferhati, as well as in international productions, including the French film “La Nuit Sacrée”, in addition to Italian and German works.
With her passing, the Moroccan artistic scene loses one of its prominent figures and a symbol of women’s artistic contribution to theater and acting in Morocco.

L’artiste marocaine de renom Safia Zayani est décédée le samedi 31 janvier 2026, à l’âge de 91 ans, au centre hospitalier Moulay Youssef de Rabat, après une riche carrière artistique qui a profondément marqué la scène culturelle et artistique marocaine.
La nouvelle de son décès a été confirmée par l’acteur Abdelkabir Rakkakna dans une déclaration à SNRTnews, précisant que la défunte souffrait de complications de santé, laissant derrière elle une grande tristesse au sein du milieu artistique et auprès de son public.
Safia Zayani est considérée comme l’une des pionnières fondatrices de l’art dramatique au Maroc et parmi les premières femmes à avoir exercé professionnellement le théâtre et l’interprétation. Elle a entamé sa carrière dans les années 1950 à travers des concours théâtraux organisés par le ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports, avant d’intégrer, en 1960, l’École nationale de théâtre.
En 1962, elle rejoint la troupe nationale en tant qu’actrice professionnelle, puis intègre en 1967 la troupe nationale de la radio, participant à de nombreuses productions radiophoniques et télévisuelles. Au cinéma, elle a pris part à des œuvres du réalisateur Jilali Ferhati, ainsi qu’à des productions internationales, dont le film français « La Nuit Sacrée », en plus de films italiens et allemands.
Avec la disparition de Safia Zayani, la scène artistique marocaine perd l’une de ses grandes figures et un symbole fort de la contribution des femmes à l’art théâtral et cinématographique au Maroc.
