By the Numbers: Interior Minister Laftit Announces Updated Figures for Voter Registration

Morocco’s Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, revealed that the provisional nationwide total of registered voters on the general electoral rolls has reached approximately 16.5 million, at the current stage of the annual revision process.

In his response to oral questions at the House of Councillors regarding voter registration, Laftit explained that the provisional electorate shows a slight male majority, with men accounting for 54% compared to 46% women. He added that 55% of registered voters reside in urban areas, while 45% live in rural areas.

The Interior Minister noted that this year’s registration drive resulted in the addition of 382,170 new registrants. Most applications were submitted through digital channels, with 254,740 registrations completed via the dedicated electoral rolls website, compared to 127,430 applications filed in person at administrative offices.

Regarding the cleansing of the electoral rolls, Laftit confirmed that the competent services removed approximately 1.4 million entries for legal reasons. These included the loss of the requirement of actual residence in the municipality or district of registration, duplicate registrations, recorded deaths, and cases of loss of voting eligibility.

The minister stressed that these measures are part of ongoing efforts to make the electoral rolls more accurate and reflective of the country’s actual electorate, thereby strengthening the credibility of upcoming elections and ensuring conditions of fairness and transparency in the voting process.
