Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, announced that Morocco has finally turned the page on seven consecutive years of drought, thanks to significant rainfall and snowfall recorded across the Kingdom in recent months.
Speaking during an oral question session at the House of Representatives, the minister explained that the period from September 1 to January 12 saw total rainfall of 108 millimeters—an increase of about 95 percent compared to the same period last year.
Baraka stressed that the rainfall surplus recorded during the current season exceeded the usual annual average by 17.6 percent, considering these positive climatic indicators as clear evidence that Morocco has effectively emerged from a prolonged seven-year drought.
In this regard, he clarified that a year is classified as a drought year when rainfall falls below 20 percent of the average of reference years. He noted that the current season has clearly surpassed this threshold, reflecting a tangible improvement in the country’s water situation.
Regarding snowfall, the minister described it as exceptional, pointing out that the snow-covered area exceeded 55,000 square kilometers—a record not seen in years—which directly contributed to strengthening water resources.
As for dams, Baraka revealed that the fill rate rose from 31 percent on December 12, 2025, to 46 percent on January 12, 2026, representing approximately 7.7 billion cubic meters of stored water, compared to just 28 percent during the same period last year.
He added that water inflows recorded between September 1 and January 12 reached 3.5 billion cubic meters, more than 3.3 billion cubic meters of which were collected in just one month, between December 12 and January 12.
The Minister of Equipment and Water concluded that these positive indicators have made it possible to secure an additional year of drinking water supply at the national level, marking an encouraging sign of relief from the drought crisis. He nevertheless emphasized the need to continue implementing the national water strategy, particularly seawater desalination projects and the expansion of desalination plants in several regions.
