The increasing accumulation of waste in several neighborhoods of the city of Boulemane has sparked local debate over the effectiveness of waste management during the winter period, amid harsh climatic conditions affecting the area—particularly the noticeable drop in temperatures.
In this context, local civil society actors considered that the difficulty faced by waste collection trucks in accessing certain alleys and locations during this season is understandable, given the climatic constraints and the geographical nature of some neighborhoods, which may impact the regularity of daily service.
However, these actors emphasized, in information received by Fes News, that this reality should not prevent the search for practical and temporary solutions to mitigate the consequences of waste accumulation. Among the proposed measures is the creation of initial collection points where accumulated waste can be transferred—especially scattered bags and containers that are often torn apart at night by stray dogs.
The same sources suggested the temporary use of National Promotion workers until weather conditions improve, to help collect waste and maintain the cleanliness of alleyways, in order to prevent some residential spaces from turning into hotspots for unpleasant odors and the spread of insects, with potential repercussions on public health.
Local actors stressed that these remarks fall within the framework of positive alerting and residents’ concern for improving quality of life, rather than criticism of the sector’s management. They called for the development of intervention mechanisms to make them more flexible and effective, in a way that takes into account the specificities of the winter season while preserving the city’s image and the cleanliness of its public spaces.
