Experts Warn Against Exaggerating Minor, Imperceptible Earth Tremors

Geology specialists told consistent sources that the recording of weak seismic tremors is a natural and almost daily phenomenon in Morocco and around the world. Dozens of tremors of varying magnitudes are detected every day, most of which are not felt by citizens and pose no real danger.

The experts explained that this scientific reality is why such tremors are not regularly reported as news, since they fall within normal seismic activity and do not warrant alarmism or public concern.

By contrast, observers have noted the emergence of what they described as a worrying trend: a rush by some websites and social media pages to publish news about “earth tremors” based on unofficial electronic applications, without verifying the accuracy of the data or placing it in its proper scientific context. This practice, they warn, contributes to spreading fear and confusion among citizens without any reliable scientific basis.

The same sources stressed that the National Institute of Geophysics remains the sole official body authorized to issue accurate and verified information regarding seismic activity recorded within the national territory. They urged the public and the media to rely on its statements and clarifications as the trusted source of information.

Specialists also called for greater responsibility in sharing news related to natural phenomena, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between confirmed scientific data and unofficial information, in order to avoid unjustified alarmism or rumors that could undermine citizens’ psychological security.
