Local Stakeholders Discuss Information on Potential Urban Irregularities in Some Neighborhoods of El Menzel, Sefrou Province

Local stakeholders in the city of El Menzel, التابعة لإقليم Sefrou, have circulated information attributed to the Moroccan Observatory for Consumer Protection, indicating the existence of urban and technical irregularities in certain neighborhoods of the city. If left unaddressed, these issues could pose potential risks to building safety and residents’ security.

According to the information shared, the observations do not concern only aspects related to the urban landscape, but also technical problems affecting the structural safety of the foundations of several buildings, in a context described by these stakeholders as marked by accumulated neglect and a lack of preventive intervention.

The same sources pointed to the spread of unmanaged vegetation and trees around some buildings, particularly in interstitial spaces and along walls. They noted that the penetration of roots into the soil surrounding concrete foundations could, from an engineering perspective, lead to moisture and water infiltration, potentially weakening infrastructure and causing cracks that require monitoring and intervention.

In this regard, local stakeholders consider the situation to raise issues related to prevention and safety, calling for it to be addressed in accordance with the laws in force—especially those governing buildings at risk of collapse and urban planning—in order to guarantee citizens’ right to safe housing.

They also urged the concerned municipal councils to activate their powers in the areas of administrative regulation and municipal policing, as provided for under Organic Law No. 113.14, by monitoring the condition of abandoned buildings, organizing green spaces, and taking the necessary preventive measures to avert any potential risks.

The same sources added that a proactive approach to addressing these issues would help protect property and ensure residents’ safety, stressing that the intervention of local authorities remains central in this process, whether through regular inspections or on-site technical actions.

The local stakeholders concluded by emphasizing the need to open an administrative investigation to identify shortcomings and the reasons behind delays in treatment, while calling for field interventions to remove potential sources of danger, in full compliance with applicable legal procedures.
