2026 Electoral Rolls: Not Enough Public Awareness? Opposition Warns of Weak Outreach, While Majority Says “Things Are Normal”

With only a few days left before the deadline to register on the electoral rolls as part of the 2026 annual revision, political debate continues over how the process is unfolding. Opposition parties have criticized what they describe as weak awareness-raising campaigns and technical difficulties accessing the registration platform, while other voices insist the procedure is proceeding normally.

In this context, Rachid Hammouni, a member of parliament from the Progress and Socialism Party (PPS), submitted a written question to Minister of the Interior Abdelouafi Laftit regarding what he considered “issues” accompanying the process—particularly on the communication and technical fronts—according to reports carried by media sources.

At the same time, political parties have been using social media posts to encourage citizens—especially those not yet registered—to complete the registration steps before the set deadlines expire.

For his part, Jamal El Asri, Secretary-General of the Unified Socialist Party, said that what is currently noticeable is “low turnout” for registration. He argued that the absence of broad public awareness campaigns in state media affects participation levels, and described parties’ digital efforts as limited. He also suggested that large segments of young people may not be sufficiently informed about the opening of the registration period.

On the other hand, Mohamed Chouki, a member of the Political Bureau of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), said registration ahead of the deadline “is proceeding normally.” He noted that his party continues its organizational and outreach efforts to boost turnout, adding that there is no reason to be concerned about how the process is being carried out, according to his statement.
