AFCON Kicks Off in Fez: Nigeria Defeat Tanzania… Tourism Sector in the Region Declares Readiness

The Fez Sports Complex hosted, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the first match of the city’s program for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as Nigeria defeated Tanzania 2–1 in a Group C encounter.

Alongside the launch of the competition, the Fez–Meknes region is witnessing broad mobilization by tourism professionals to ensure the success of the event and to welcome African teams, delegations, and fans under suitable conditions, according to a statement by the President of the Regional Tourism Council, Ahmed Essentissi, to the Maghreb Arab Press Agency.

The same official confirmed that the classified accommodation system is fully ready, noting that reservations for the first batches of supporters and delegations have already been confirmed, and that the current capacity of classified beds is sufficient at this stage.

He also highlighted that Fez will host three matches in Group C (Nigeria, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda), and that the Nigerian national team will be based in the city throughout the group stage, alongside accompanying efforts in terms of upgrading, services, and digital promotion of the destination.
