The Rabat Bar Association, under the presidency of the Bar President, issued an official statement today strongly condemning what was stated in an audio-visual recording circulating on social media platforms, documenting a session of the Temporary Committee for Managing the Press and Publishing Sector, which contains expressions considered offensive to the legal profession and undermining the dignity of lawyers and their essential role in defending their clients’ rights.
The statement confirmed that these remarks constitute acts criminalized under Article 263 of the Penal Code (public insult to a professional category), are characterized by lack of respect for the principle of proper professional conduct, and constitute unjustified harm to professional ethics and the dignity of the legal profession.
The Bar President also indicated that the language in the recording not only offends lawyers but also harms national institutions and damages the country’s reputation as a state of law and institutions.
The Bar Association announced the following:
- Initiation of necessary legal and professional procedures against anyone proven to be involved in this offense
- Filing a criminal complaint for insult and harm to professional dignity
- Resort to all judicial and disciplinary avenues to restore the honor of the legal profession
- Continued defense of the mission of advocacy and protection of the profession’s independence and dignity
The statement concluded by emphasizing that the Rabat Bar Association will not tolerate any compromise on its principles and professional values, and will not allow any harm to the dignity of lawyers or their constitutional role in administering justice.
It should be noted that the circulated recording sparked a wave of widespread discontent within the professional body and brought back memories of previous tensions between certain press parties and bar associations regarding complaints and legal proceedings.
