Women’s Football: Moroccan National Team Faces Burkina Faso and South Africa in Friendly Preparation Matches

Rabat – November 25, 2025

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced a friendly match program for the first women’s national team “Atlas Lionesses,” as part of preparations for upcoming commitments, especially the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to be held in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026, which will bring together 12 African national teams, including Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, and Burkina Faso.

This friendly program comes as a strategic step to enhance the team’s physical and tactical fitness under the leadership of Portuguese coach Filipa Costa, who took charge in August 2024, amid expectations that these matches will provide an opportunity to test the new formation following the team’s participation in the 2023 World Cup, where they achieved a historic feat by qualifying for the Round of 16 for the first time.

Friendly Match Schedule:

  • Friday, November 28, 2025: Morocco vs. Burkina Faso, at the Grand Stadium in Marrakech, starting at 7:00 PM local time.
  • Tuesday, December 2, 2025: Morocco vs. South Africa, at the Grand Stadium in Agadir, starting at 7:00 PM local time.

These two encounters represent an important test against strong African opponents; Burkina Faso’s national team ranks 78th globally in the FIFA ranking, while South Africa ranks 54th and is the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations champion, making the matches an opportunity to gauge the Lionesses’ level against competitive teams on the African continent.

The Federation confirmed in its official statement that these matches will be played in front of spectators, inviting supporters to attend and cheer for the team, which seeks to strengthen its position as a leading force in African women’s football, especially with Morocco hosting the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations, which will see an expansion in the number of participating teams to 12 instead of the previous 12.
