Marrakech – A widespread security alert was triggered in the commune of Ait Immour in Marrakech Province, after road construction workers discovered skeletal remains suspected to be human, belonging to two people – a man and a woman – on Sunday afternoon, November 16, 2025, in Douar Safsafa. These remains immediately halted construction work, prompting workers to notify local authorities without delay.
Discovery Details and Initial Procedures
Security sources reported that the bones were found while excavating soil for road preparation in Douar Safsafa, a quiet rural area located about 20 kilometers south of Marrakech. Initial analyses conducted by the Scientific and Technical Police Service indicated that the remains are relatively old but belong to two adults of both genders, raising questions about the circumstances of death and illegal burial. No additional details about the condition of the bones or any potential evidence were disclosed to maintain investigation confidentiality.
Upon notification, Royal Gendarmerie elements from the Ait Immour commune center rushed to the site, completely closing the area and preventing any additional work intervention. The remains were transferred to the forensic medicine laboratory at Ibn Tofail University Hospital for precise examinations including genetic and carbon analyses to determine age, gender, and probable cause of death.
Opening of Judicial Investigation Under Public Prosecutor’s Supervision
The competent Public Prosecutor’s Office immediately ordered the opening of an official investigation to reveal the nature of these remains and the circumstances of their presence at the site, focusing on their possible connection to an old crime or historical incident. The Judicial Police at the Marrakech Security Prefecture supervises the investigation, which includes interrogating workers and local residents, and examining the area’s historical records to rule out any connection to previous cases.
This incident is the second of its kind in Marrakech in recent months, after skeletal remains were discovered at a hotel in Palmeraie last August, reinforcing the need to strengthen security procedures at public works sites.
