Fez: Arrival of Second Batch of Chinese Buses (Approximately 40 Units) to Strengthen Urban Transport Fleet and Overcome Chronic Crisis

Fez – The city of Fez, as part of the national program for renewing the urban transport fleet, witnessed the arrival of the second batch of new Chinese-manufactured buses, estimated at around 40 units, just days after receiving the first batch of 48 buses on November 3rd. This renewal comes as part of efforts by the Ministry of Interior and local authorities to improve service quality and reduce pressure on residents, especially in preparation for hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations events.

Details of the Second Batch and National Context

These buses are part of a major deal with the Chinese company “Yutong,” covering 723 buses distributed across several Moroccan cities, including Fez, which is expected to receive approximately 261 units in total. The buses are equipped with the latest technologies, such as electronic payment systems, surveillance cameras, and movement tracking, ensuring greater passenger comfort and higher operational efficiency. The second batch was sent to the reception center at the Fez Grand Complex to undergo technical inspections before entering service in the coming weeks.

The operation is overseen by “ISSAL Fès” in partnership with the territorial community, within the context of a national strategy aimed at renewing the fleet in 84 cities, to address the recorded deficit and reduce dependence on old vehicles that have caused recurring crises, such as overcrowding and delays.

Importance of the Renewal for Fez Residents

Urban transport in Fez suffers from chronic challenges, including a shortage of buses and their deteriorating condition, which has forced residents to rely on alternative means. The second batch is expected to contribute to:

  • Covering additional routes and reducing waiting times.
  • Strengthening connections between peripheral neighborhoods and the center.
  • Supporting sustainable development through environmentally friendly vehicles.

Local officials expressed their commitment to expediting procedures to ensure the buses enter service before the end of the month, with plans to add additional batches soon.

This step represents a qualitative leap toward modern urban transport befitting Fez’s status as a scientific capital, meeting residents’ daily needs, while focusing on preparations for upcoming sporting events.
