Between life and death… The first air rescue operation from Laayoune transfers a pregnant woman in critical condition to the new Agadir hospital

The Mohammed VI University Hospital Center in Agadir, which was officially opened by High Royal Instructions on November 3, 2025, witnessed its first successful air medical intervention on Tuesday, November 4. The incident involved the transfer of a 38-year-old pregnant woman in the beginning of her eighth month from the Moulay El Hassan Ben El Mehdi Regional Hospital Center in Laayoune, due to placenta previa, which led to a potential premature birth threatening the lives of both mother and fetus.

The medical team in Laayoune immediately intervened to stabilize the patient’s condition, then an emergency air transfer to Agadir was decided, as the situation required third-level surgical intervention. A complete medical and nursing crew accompanied her throughout the journey, which was carried out via a medical aircraft provided by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.

The operation succeeded thanks to precise coordination between the Emergency Medical Assistance services (SAMU) and the Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service (SMUR) in both Laayoune and Agadir, from takeoff to reception. This intervention highlights the readiness of the national health system from the first day of the center’s operation, which includes 867 beds and specialized poles for mother and child, with investments totaling 3.1 billion dirhams.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that this operation falls within efforts to strengthen air medical transport, to ensure rapid access to specialized treatments in remote areas. The Mohammed VI Hospital Center in Agadir is a medical pole of excellence in the Souss-Massa region, equipped with modern technologies including a robot for medication distribution and an integrated sterilization center.

The newspaper is following developments in the patient’s condition and future operations at the center. For more details about Laayoune-Agadir medical air transfer or Mohammed VI Hospital Agadir opening, you can follow our ongoing updates.
