Rabat – His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, accompanied by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, presided this Monday over the inauguration of the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex of Rabat, an international reference facility that works to develop a high-quality offering at the national level, serving everyone, while providing high-level training in health professions.

His Majesty the King also gave this day His High Instructions for the opening of the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center of Agadir, a medical pole of excellence that will enable a real qualitative leap in the provision of healthcare services and the training of doctors at the level of the Souss-Massa region.

The Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex of Rabat, built by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Sciences and Health, represents a true model of a new era of modern and smart hospital facilities, thus embodying His Majesty the King’s vision and High care.

It also reflects the ambition to enable all citizens to have equitable access to new generation healthcare services, relying on a hospital institution that integrates the most advanced medical innovations, supported by a reference university and research structure.

Furthermore, the completion of this complex embodies the pivotal role that His Majesty the King assigns to the training of human resources in this vital sector, and His Majesty’s determination to provide them with quality training that adapts to scientific and technological developments in the field of treatments, prevention, management and health governance, in line with international standards.

This complex, built on an area of 280,000 square meters, consists of two complementary structures: the Mohammed VI International University Hospital of Rabat (190,000 square meters), and Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences of Rabat (90,000 square meters).

A New Generation Institution that Places the Patient at the Center of Its Concerns

The Mohammed VI International University Hospital of Rabat, with an initial capacity of 600 beds expandable to 1,000 beds, includes more than 30 poles of excellence in medical-surgical and medical-technical fields, covering specialties such as robotic surgery, neurosurgery, interventional cardiology, oncology, radiotherapy, and precision medical imaging.

The hospital also contains 24 modern operating rooms, 19 of which are in the integrated surgical complex that extends over a total area of 3,400 square meters, including hybrid and robotic rooms, in addition to 143 beds dedicated to critical care, including 30 incubators for neonatal resuscitation.

The institution has high-technology equipment, including a PET-MRI scanner, the first of its kind in Morocco and Africa, coupled with a PET scanner for precise diagnosis, in addition to a 3 Tesla Omega MRI scanner, a radiotherapy system, a robotic hospital pharmacy, and a simulation center.

Among the innovative services, the hospital has a unit for treating severe burns and a hyperbaric and hypobaric oxygen therapy department, the only one in Morocco, dedicated to advanced medical treatments and physiological research.

The complex is also distinguished by the establishment of the first fully automated laboratory platform in Africa, covering all stages of biological analyses (pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical), in several areas including chemistry, immunology and hematology. It also hosts Morocco’s first digital pathology laboratory, ensuring precise tracking and high-quality diagnostic results.

As it places the patient at the center of its concerns, the Mohammed VI International University Hospital of Rabat offers integrated and personalized care pathways that ensure comfort, safety and quality. Furthermore, this institution is a distinguished educational platform for students of Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences, providing them access to advanced clinical and technological environments.

Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences – Rabat, an academic pole of excellence, will contribute to strengthening one of the strategic pillars for rehabilitating the health system, namely human capital.

Thus, the university includes 15 lecture halls with a capacity of up to 4,000 seats, 72 theoretical classrooms, and 217 practical and tutorial work rooms. This pedagogical structure, which can accommodate up to 8,000 students, includes several faculties and schools: Mohammed VI Faculty of Medicine – Rabat, Mohammed VI Faculty of Dentistry, Mohammed VI Faculty of Pharmacy, Mohammed VI School of Veterinary Medicine, Mohammed VI Higher School of Health Sciences Engineers, and Mohammed VI Faculty of Nursing Sciences and Health Professions. This pole is complemented by an international medical simulation center that provides students with practical training in an environment that simulates professional practice reality.

As part of its commitment to a sustainable approach, the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex of Rabat obtained the High Environmental Quality (HQE) certification at the “Excellent” level. It is equipped with 8,800 square meters of photovoltaic panels, covering more than 10 percent of its energy needs, which enables a 40 percent reduction in carbon emissions.

The Mohammed VI University Hospital Center of Agadir, a True Symbol of Modernization

As for the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center of Agadir, which will be opened to citizens according to High Royal Instructions, it was built on an area of 30 hectares (127,000 square meters covered), and is located near the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy.

The new Mohammed VI University Hospital Center of Agadir, for which investments of 3.1 billion dirhams were allocated, with a total capacity of 867 beds, includes several poles (mother and child, medicine and surgery, radiology, cardiology…), a central surgical wing (19 operating rooms), and other rooms for emergencies (5 rooms) and for severe burns, a laboratory, a central pharmacy, and an integrated training and simulation system.

As a true symbol of modernization, the Agadir University Hospital Center is the first medical institution in Africa to integrate surgical robot technology that allows minimally invasive surgical interventions with extreme precision and three-dimensional vision with extreme accuracy, and unprecedented comfortable conditions for both surgeon and patient.

The cardiology pole of the university hospital center, which includes two catheterization rooms and intensive care units equipped with multi-parameter monitoring devices, provides complete care for patients with coronary artery diseases and those related to heart rhythm. Equipment that meets international standards enables interventions involving angioplasty, electrophysiological exploration, and high-quality intravascular imaging.

Moreover, to ensure patient safety and quality of health services, the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center of Agadir has a complete sterilization center (disinfector, steam sterilization device, automated conditioning spaces ensuring equipment tracking and maximum patient safety), as well as a central pharmacy equipped with a robot for medication distribution ensuring safe preparation and automated delivery to hospital departments, a first at the regional level.

This new generation reference hospital, which will serve approximately 3 million people, will contribute to developing hospital infrastructure at the level of the Souss-Massa region, strengthening healthcare services, and bringing them closer to citizens who will no longer need to travel to other cities to perform complex surgeries or treat certain difficult medical conditions.

These two major hospital structures will contribute to creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs, as well as economic and social development at both regional and national levels.
