The Booksellers Association holds publishers responsible for the severe shortage of books for leading schools

In an official press release issued by the Moroccan Booksellers Association on October 31, 2025, from Rabat, the association expressed profound concern over the acute shortage of textbooks specifically for pioneer schools. This deficit affects a significant number of titles across various subjects and educational levels, negatively impacting the normal progression of the teaching process in numerous institutions and threatening the principle of equal opportunities among students while disrupting the start of the 2025/2026 school year.

Causes of the Shortage and Its Impact on Families and Students

Since the beginning of the school year, bookstores have witnessed a large influx of parents and students seeking pioneer school textbooks, only to find them unavailable due to depleted stock or delays by publishers in supplying them. The association highlighted that this confusion has caused clear distress among families, directly affecting students’ readiness for studies, particularly in pioneer programs that rely on specific curricula to foster innovation and quality education.

Holding Publishers Fully Responsible

The Moroccan Booksellers Association affirmed that bookstores bear no responsibility for this shortage, placing full accountability on publishers for delays in printing and distribution, as well as failing to adhere to deadlines set before the school year’s start. The release also criticized non-compliance with agreed profit margins, which undermines the dignity of booksellers who play a fundamental role in securing and providing school textbooks on time.

Call for Urgent Intervention by the Ministry of National Education

The association urged the overseeing Ministry of National Education to intervene promptly, compelling publishers to comply with the terms of reference and ensure sufficient quantities of these textbooks are available nationwide. This call aims to safeguard students’ rights to equitable education and protect the educational system from disruptions that could affect the quality of teaching in pioneer schools.

This statement comes amid national efforts to advance education, where pioneer schools serve as a model for pedagogical innovation, underscoring the need for better coordination among stakeholders to prevent recurrence of such issues in future seasons.
