The Future Association of Young Journalists expressed strong condemnation of remarks made by the Mayor of Fès, Mr. Abdel Salam El Bekali, during the fourth regular session of October. The mayor directed offensive language toward journalists covering the session, which the association deemed “unbecoming of the head of a major municipality like Fès.”
In a strongly worded statement received by the media, the association described the mayor’s behavior as a serious violation of press freedom and freedom of expression, as well as unacceptable conduct incompatible with institutional communication ethics. It asserted that such actions “damage the image of elected officials and reflect a decline in public discourse.”
The association emphasized that press freedom is a constitutional right that cannot be compromised under any pretext. It expressed full solidarity with all journalists subjected to this behavior and called for an end to attempts to restrict media freedom.
The statement also condemned the “irresponsible verbal outburst” which carries negative messages harming journalists’ dignity and contradicting democratic values and the spirit of transparency expected in the work of elected institutions.
The association praised the efforts of journalists to transmit the truth and enlighten the local and national public opinion about the proceedings inside the Fès Municipal Council. It highlighted that their noble profession is based on honesty, objectivity, and reporting verified facts.
The Future Association of Young Journalists concluded by reaffirming its continued defense of press freedom and the dignity of journalists, pledging to monitor and oppose any pressures that target their professional performance, and affirming its commitment to stand alongside colleagues against any threats to their constitutional rights.
