Maurizio Mariani Appointed as Referee for U-20 World Cup Final Between Morocco and Argentina

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has officially appointed Italian referee Maurizio Mariani to oversee the final match of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025, which brings together Morocco and Argentina this Sunday at 8:00 PM local time in Santiago, the Chilean capital.

According to FIFA’s official website, Mariani will lead the officiating team in the final, assisted by his compatriots Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni, while the American Joe Dickerson has been named as the fourth official for this much-anticipated encounter.

Speaking to FIFA’s website ahead of the match, Mariani expressed his immense pride in the assignment, describing it as “a tremendous honour, a major responsibility, and a rare privilege.” He noted that this opportunity is the result of years of rigorous training, preparation, and teamwork for both himself and his officiating team. Mariani stated, “This will be the finale of a spectacular tournament where all the players gave their utmost efforts. We, as FIFA’s top refereeing team, have committed ourselves to do the same.” He also extended his gratitude to refereeing officials Pierluigi Collina and Massimo Busacca for their confidence and continued support throughout the tournament and leading up to the final.

Mariani further praised the exceptional organization of Chile, the host of this 24th edition of the global youth championship, highlighting the quality of infrastructures, the warm hospitality of the Chilean people, and the festive atmosphere that characterized the tournament from start to finish.

This final marks a historic moment for the Moroccan U-20 national team, who are reaching the tournament’s final stage for the first time in their history. They are set to face an experienced Argentine side known for their significant presence in major football events, in a highly anticipated clash that is being hailed as a summit of world youth football, promising excitement and intensity to fans across the globe.

Meanwhile, FIFA has also announced the refereeing team for the third-place playoff, scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 PM Santiago time between France and Colombia. Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan will take charge of this match, assisted by Gilbert Cheruiyot from Kenya and Abelmiro Montenegro from São Tomé and Príncipe, with Saudi official Khalid Al-Turais serving as the fourth referee.

The 2025 U-20 World Cup matches are being officiated by a diverse group of 54 referees from various continental federations, supported by the continuous use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology throughout the championship.
