For the dignity of rural girls, the Minister of Education pledges to end the suffering of 4,000 schools without sanitation facilities

The Minister of National Education, Early Childhood, and Sports, Mohamed Saad Barada, revealed that about 4,000 educational institutions in rural and mountainous areas still lack restroom facilities, describing this situation as “completely unacceptable.” This statement was made during the weekly oral questions session at the House of Representatives on Monday, October 13.

The minister emphasized that it is unacceptable for a school to lack water services, asking, “How can a girl not leave school upon reaching adulthood when there is no restroom or any such facility available?” He confirmed that the ministry has developed a comprehensive plan to supply these educational institutions with water and restrooms, assuring that “by the end of this year, water will reach all these institutions, which will be equipped with necessary sanitary facilities to be ready for use.”

Barada noted that this program is part of government efforts to improve the quality of education and infrastructure in rural areas, ensuring a safe and healthy school environment for all students, especially girls who are more affected by the absence of sanitary facilities in schools.

This initiative is part of the social and educational reforms the ministry is counting on to reduce disparities between urban and rural areas, improve schooling conditions, and curb school dropout rates, which are often linked to weak basic infrastructure in rural schools.
