In a firm and unequivocal statement, Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), responded today to recent rumors and speculations about the potential withdrawal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations from Morocco.
Speaking at the CAF General Assembly, Motsepe said, “I have received questions about what is happening in Morocco and our position, and our position is very clear: Morocco is Plan A, Morocco is Plan B, and Morocco is Plan C.” This means that Morocco remains the sole option for hosting the continental tournament.
He emphasized that CAF is confident in working closely with the Moroccan government, officials, and citizens to organize the most successful edition in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Addressing concerns arising from recent youth protests in some Moroccan cities demanding reforms in sectors like education and health, Motsepe dismissed any doubts about Morocco’s readiness. He assured that these events will not affect the country’s capacity to stage the tournament.
Concluding his message, Motsepe stated with emphasis, “Morocco is the only plan; the rest are just rumors from certain quarters,” pointing implicitly to neighboring Algeria’s attempts to cast uncertainty.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, featuring 24 national teams competing in nine stadiums across six Moroccan cities: Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fez, Marrakech, and Agadir. This will be Morocco’s second time hosting the AFCON, with high expectations for a historic and memorable event.
