The National Union of Higher Education, affiliated with the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), has announced a nationwide strike lasting 72 hours, from September 30 to October 2, 2025. This action will be accompanied by sit-ins in front of university headquarters across several cities in the Kingdom.
The union described this movement as a new step of escalation in defending the dignity of public universities and their staff. In a statement, the organization emphasized that the strike aims to protect the rights and dignity of higher education staff, university institutions, as well as university residences.
The union accused the government and the supervising ministry of blocking previously agreed-upon solutions and failing to honor commitments made to social partners. It also deplored the absence of “serious and responsible” dialogue, replaced, in its view, by purely “formal and sterile” meetings far from addressing the real challenges faced by Moroccan universities.
Furthermore, the union categorically rejected draft law 59-24, considering it a “direct threat” to the free nature of education, calling for its immediate withdrawal and integration into a consultative process involving all social actors.
The union also demands the immediate publication of the special statute for higher education employees, reaffirming its commitment to preserving existing gains and rejecting any attempts to undermine them.
Finally, the union condemned restrictions on the right to strike and called for the formation of a united trade union front capable of effectively defending public universities and staff rights.
