In a significant move opening the door to regulated and structured medical use of cannabis in Morocco, the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis-Related Activities (ANRAC) has signed official agreements with five specialized national scientific associations. This qualitative step establishes a clear framework for the prescription and distribution of medications derived from the cannabis plant, marking a major leap that will invigorate this emerging sector.
According to information obtained by Hespress from an informed source, these agreements were not made spontaneously but are the culmination of an in-depth study conducted by the agency in partnership with the National Medical Authority.
The study resulted in detailed therapeutic protocols tailored to the specificities of each medical specialty, ensuring the safe and effective use of cannabis-based pharmaceutical products, particularly cannabidiol (CBD).
The signed agreements cover five vital medical specialties, selected based on scientific research highlighting the potential benefits of cannabis chemical compounds. These associations include neurology, gastroenterology, dermatology, internal medicine, and geriatrics.
The source clarified that the study details and proposed protocols were initially presented to ten specialized medical associations for review and feedback, reflecting the agency’s commitment to a participatory and comprehensive approach that ensures full involvement of the medical community.
Prescription of cannabis-based medications such as CBD will not be freely available but subject to strict conditions to ensure the rational use of these treatments. Under the agreed protocols, specific conditions will be defined for each medical case, considering patient age, recommended dosages, and quantities.
The source described this as a “qualitative leap” enabling Morocco to transition to structured and regulated medical cannabis use. He added: “This process will allow licensed operators to officially and legally produce and market their products, creating a significant economic dynamic at the national level.”
The agreements were signed last week and represent the culmination of a long process that began with Law No. 13.21 concerning the legitimate uses of cannabis. This law places Morocco among the countries adopting modern health policies that leverage the therapeutic potential of this historic plant within a strict scientific and legal framework.
