Customs official to Fas News: Collection orders worth millions of dirhams are being issued against shisha cafés, while professionals warn of the threat of bankruptcy

A customs official from the Fes administration told Fas News in an exclusive statement that recent raids targeting shisha cafés in the city will result in the issuance of customs compensation collection orders estimated at millions of dirhams. Conversely, several café owners expressed deep concern, warning that these measures could drive the sector to bankruptcy.

The customs official explained that the inspection campaigns aim to enforce the law regarding the possession and consumption of smuggled “maasal” (flavored tobacco), noting that based on the seizures, financial compensation orders will be issued against violators. He added that in the event of non-voluntary payment, legal procedures will be followed that may include automatic seizure of properties to ensure state dues are collected.

For their part, café owners reiterated that they are victims of a legal vacuum, and that their activity provides a service to a segment of consumers while securing the livelihood of dozens of families. They emphasized that punitive actions and hefty fines, without providing a clear legal framework, directly threaten their investments and put dozens of cafés at risk of permanent closure, calling for urgent intervention to regulate and protect the sector from collapse.
