By Order of the Governor of Sefrou Province: Strict Campaign to Free Public Spaces with Calls for a Social Approach toward Street Vendors

On the morning of Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the security and local authorities of the city of Sefrou launched a strict campaign under the direct supervision of the provincial governor. The campaign aimed to clear public spaces of illegal encroachments, particularly those practiced by some shop owners, café operators, and similar commercial establishments. The campaign seeks to organize public spaces, improve traffic flow, and secure an orderly urban image befitting the city.

While these measures are crucial for maintaining public order and enforcing the law, many observers and experts emphasize the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach that takes into account social dimensions, especially regarding the phenomenon of street vendors, known locally as “farrasha.” Although these vendors often operate in unregulated conditions, they constitute a vital economic and social segment supporting many families who depend on this activity for their daily livelihood.

In this context, civil society actors and stakeholders call for alternative solutions aimed at integrating street vendors into the city’s economic fabric. This can be achieved through the establishment of organized, model markets, provision of professional training opportunities, and the implementation of a legal framework that protects their rights and improves their economic and social conditions.

These calls highlight that security campaigns alone are insufficient to address the challenges of illegal occupation of public spaces. Instead, such campaigns must be part of an integrated strategy that includes social and educational measures to ensure social stability and prevent the worsening of humanitarian conditions for economically vulnerable groups.

As local authorities continue their efforts to regulate urban spaces in Sefrou, maintaining a balance between enforcing order and respecting social rights remains an essential requirement for promoting sustainable development and social peace in the city.
