Ministry of Agriculture Announces Results of National Livestock Census

Rabat – August 26, 2025

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests has announced the completion of the national livestock census. The operation, which took place in various prefectures and provinces of the Kingdom between June 26 and August 16, 2025, was conducted to establish an accurate and updated database on the status of the national herd, in line with royal directives.

Census Objectives

The operation aimed to create a comprehensive and detailed database on the number and types of livestock, along with their geographical distribution. This will enhance tracking and monitoring mechanisms, ensure sustainable management of animal resources, and support veterinary health insurance programs and national agricultural policies.

Key Findings

The census provided precise national figures. The total number of livestock reached 32,832,573 heads, distributed as follows:

  • Sheep: 16,348,449 heads
  • Goats: 12,158,248 heads
  • Cattle: 5,293,805 heads
  • Camels: 91,432 heads

Additional Data

The Ministry revealed that the national herd is characterized by the widespread use of traditional farming methods, which constitute about 70% of the units visited and rely mainly on natural pastures. In contrast, modern farming accounts for about 30% of the total, concentrated primarily in large, specialized farms.

The statement highlighted that this operation, which involved more than 150 veterinary staff and technicians, is an essential tool for modernizing public policies aimed at the agricultural sector, particularly those related to food security, animal resource development, and productivity improvement.
