Masaad Boulos, Envoy of U.S. President Trump, on a Forthcoming Visit to Morocco and Algeria to Discuss the Sahara File

Rabat, Morocco – In a new American diplomatic push in North Africa, Masaad Boulos, a special advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump and official in charge of African and Middle Eastern affairs, is set to visit Morocco and Algeria in the coming days. This visit follows a tour that took him to Tunisia and Libya, as revealed by the specialized magazine “Geopolitical Desk (GPD).”

According to the magazine, this tour is part of a strategic realignment by the Trump administration, based on the principle of “trade over aid,” and aims to achieve stability in key areas of the Maghreb and Sahel through sustainable political solutions.

The Sahara File on the Discussion Table

Boulos, who has shown diplomatic success in unblocking negotiations between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, now faces a more complex mission in regional files, most notably the thorny issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

Masaad Boulos had previously confirmed in an interview with “Al Arabiya” channel last April the Trump administration’s intention to contribute effectively to ending the crisis between Morocco and Algeria, which has roots in nearly 50 years of tension over the status of the Sahara. He noted that President Trump had aspired, since his first term, to close this file, in reference to the U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in December 2020.

A Clear American Message

Those close to President Trump affirm the current administration’s determination to resume work on the file. According to Masaad Boulos, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during discussions with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, confirmed the United States’ support for a mutually acceptable solution under the auspices of the United Nations.

Boulos also stressed the need to improve the humanitarian situation of Sahrawi refugees in Algeria, explaining that any comprehensive solution must integrate this dimension, without questioning the centrality of the Moroccan autonomy plan, which enjoys increasing international support.

Many analysts believe that this diplomatic tour could pave the way for a new phase of American mediation, as an increasing number of European and African countries are rallying behind the autonomy initiative as a realistic, pragmatic, and credible solution.
