Laayoune – This Thursday, the Moroccan people celebrate the 46th anniversary of the recovery of the Oued Eddahab province, a heroic epic and a pivotal moment in the Kingdom’s journey to complete its territorial integrity. The occasion is marked by a constant national mobilization around the nation’s foremost cause.
On August 14, 1979, the scholars, notables, and tribal leaders of the Oued Eddahab province went to the Royal Palace in Rabat to pledge their allegiance (Bay’ah) to the late His Majesty King Hassan II, reaffirming their unbreakable bonds of loyalty to the Glorious Alaouite Throne.
Through this solemn and highly patriotic act, the people of Oued Eddahab signaled that they would never relinquish their Moroccan identity, affirming their attachment to the homeland and its sacred territorial integrity, from Tangier to Lagouira, despite the maneuvers of adversaries.
A Historical Moment and a Royal Pledge
This historic moment was immortalized by a Royal Speech in which the late Sovereign declared: “On this blessed day, We have just received your oath of allegiance, which We shall safeguard and cherish as a sacred trust. Henceforth, you must honor this oath. For Our part, We also make it Our duty to guarantee your defense and security and to work tirelessly for your well-being. Be therefore, My dear sons, welcome in your homeland. Let us thank the Almighty for having blessed Us by reattaching the South of Our country to its northern homeland and by restoring the bonds of blood between its sons.”
During this ceremony, the late HM King Hassan II also proceeded to distribute arms to the representatives of the tribes, a powerful and symbolic gesture of the continued struggle for the defense of territorial integrity and the establishment of security in the recovered southern provinces.
A Historic Visit Deepens Bonds
Just a few months later, the meeting between the architect of the Glorious Green March and the sons of the Oued Eddahab province was renewed, on the occasion of the historic visit made by the late Sovereign to Dakhla.
This visit once again consecrated the perfect symbiosis between the Glorious Alaouite Throne and the sons of the southern provinces. This unbreakable bond, which constitutes the cement of the nation’s cohesion, thwarted all the plots hatched by the enemies of Morocco’s territorial integrity.
From Recovery to Comprehensive Development
Since then, the Kingdom has worked for the economic and social promotion of its southern provinces, with a view to integrating them into the process of global and sustainable development.
The celebration of the anniversary of the recovery of Oued Eddahab is an opportunity to recall the profound significance of this event, which embodies the unwavering attachment of the province’s population to the Sovereign and the Alaouite Throne and their constant mobilization for the defense of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, as evidenced by the recovery of the city of Tarfaya on April 15, 1958, then Sidi Ifni on June 30, 1969, and the other parts of the Moroccan Sahara thanks to the epic of the Green March on November 6, 1975.
A New Era and Accompanying Development
Persevering on the path charted by His late father, His Majesty King Mohammed VI pays particular attention to the southern provinces, ensuring their economic prosperity and consolidating national mobilization to thwart the plots of the enemies of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity.
Development efforts have indeed continued in this cherished part of the Kingdom, with the aim of establishing it as a true economic hub. Four decades after their liberation, the provinces and regions of southern Morocco are experiencing a sustained dynamic in various fields, thanks to a series of structuring and multi-sectoral projects.
Commemorations and Tributes
The commemoration of the 46th anniversary of the recovery of Oued Eddahab also reflects the clear expression of the will of the Moroccan people and their constant mobilization for the consecration of national gains and the defense of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, as well as their attachment to the Moroccan plan for the autonomy of the southern provinces.
To commemorate this landmark event in Morocco’s history, the High Commission for Former Resistants and Former Members of the Liberation Army (HCAR) will organize a meeting on Thursday at the headquarters of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab province. During the event, tributes will be paid to former resistance fighters and members of the liberation army, and financial aid will be distributed to members of the Resistance Family.
To commemorate this national epic, several educational and cultural events and activities focused on honoring the historical memory are planned across all regional and provincial delegations, and local offices of the HCAR, as well as in spaces of historical memory, resistance, and liberation, in partnership with ministerial departments, public establishments, elected bodies, and civil society associations.
