Chefchaouen – Ongoing Coverage
The province of Chefchaouen was the scene, this Tuesday, of two exceptionally large-scale forest fires in the Granja (Derdara) and Bab Taza areas, causing significant concern over the rapid spread of the flames.
According to local sources, the fires broke out under circumstances that are still undetermined, before spreading rapidly due to particularly strong gusts of wind, which complicated initial containment efforts.
Ground Teams on High Alert
Upon receiving reports of the fires, a state of maximum alert was declared among local authorities, the Water and Forests Department, and Civil Protection units. All available human resources and equipment were mobilized on the ground in a desperate attempt to halt the fire’s progress and prevent it from reaching nearby residential areas.
However, the mountainous and rugged terrain of the region, coupled with the difficulty of accessing some of the active hotspots, posed a major challenge for the firefighting crews, who found it extremely difficult to reach the heart of the flames and deal with them directly.
Decisive Intervention from the Sky
Given the expanding scale and increasing danger of the fires, the ground forces were reinforced in the afternoon with two specialized “Canadair” firefighting aircraft. The two planes began executing successive sorties over the fire zone, dropping massive quantities of water on the most active hotspots.
This aerial support comes at a critical time and is considered the decisive factor for controlling the advancing flames, which have proven difficult to extinguish by conventional ground-based means alone.
Call for Vigilance and Caution
The concerned authorities continue their tireless efforts to achieve full control over both fire fronts. At the same time, they have called on residents living near the at-risk areas to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, and to avoid approaching the burning perimeters entirely, until the fires are officially declared completely extinguished.
