Investigating Judge Orders Detention of Chefchaouen Provincial Council President in Public Funds Embezzlement Probe

RABAT – FezNews
An investigating judge specializing in financial crimes in Rabat issued a decision Thursday to place the president of Chefchaouen’s Provincial Council under pretrial detention on charges of embezzling public funds.

According to sources, the prosecutor’s office ordered the official’s provisional incarceration at Tamesna Prison (Rabat outskirts) following his referral by the National Judicial Police Brigade after concluding its months-long investigation.

Investigation Details:
The probe, which tracked the council president for several months, uncovered his alleged involvement—alongside council staff—in illicitly dissipating public funds through unauthorized mechanisms. Authorities also summoned several elected officials to testify as part of the expanded investigation.

Legal Proceedings:
The detention order came after the National Judicial Police Brigade forwarded the case file to the prosecutor’s office, which requested pretrial detention based on “substantial evidence” implicating the official in public fund misappropriation, sources confirmed.

Case Context:
This case stands as the most significant in Chefchaouen province in recent months, sparking widespread debate about oversight mechanisms for local public budgets. Judicial sources anticipate expanded proceedings targeting additional implicated figures in the coming days.
