In a striking climatic contradiction, the Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has warned of a severe heatwave that will hit several regions of the kingdom, accompanied simultaneously by strong weather disturbances including torrential rain, hail, and gusty winds. The DGM issued an orange-level alert bulletin, effective from Tuesday through Friday, urging citizens to exercise caution and vigilance.
During this alert period, specifically on Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures are expected to rise sharply, ranging between 40 and 44 degrees Celsius in the prefectures and provinces of Taza, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Ouezzane, Rehamna, Beni Mellal, Meknès, Fès, Moulay Yacoub, Ouarzazate, Khouribga, Youssoufia, Taounate, and Taroudant. Forecasts indicate that these hot conditions will place a strain on citizens, particularly the elderly and children, with extreme heat expected in the afternoons.
However, this heatwave will not be the only weather phenomenon the country will experience. Some regions are expected to record record-high temperatures, with forecasts predicting a range between 44 and 47 degrees Celsius from Tuesday to Friday in the provinces of Tata, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, and Aousserd—areas known for their harsh desert climate.
In stark contrast to this heat, other parts of the kingdom will experience atmospheric instability. The DGM forecasts torrential thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong winds on Tuesday, from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The affected areas include the prefectures and provinces of Tinghir, Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Khénifra, Midelt, Ouarzazate, Taroudant, Khouribga, Al Haouz, Chichaoua, El Kelaa des Sraghna, and Azilal. Precipitation levels in these regions are expected to reach between 15 and 30 mm, which could cause flash floods in some waterways and low-lying areas.
