The Public Prosecutor at the Criminal Primary Court in Casablanca announced that the videos published on a website, which contained various claims and information about the death of the late Hicham Mendari, “have no connection to the truth.”
According to an official statement by the Public Prosecutor, the said recordings were subject to a judicial investigation that resulted in the appearance of the deceased’s brother before the court. The investigation revealed that the recordings were fabricated and had no relation to the facts, as shown by the judicial inquiry conducted in this regard, with the following details:
– The spontaneous statements of the deceased’s brother during the preliminary investigation indicated that he purchased prepaid SIM cards to communicate with the website owner since late 2023. He sought the phone number of the site owner via social media platforms and initiated contact while impersonating a retired security officer, falsely claiming to have important information about the deceased’s death that he wished to provide for publication on the site.
– The suspect admitted during the preliminary investigation that the recordings broadcast on the mentioned website contained information and facts that were fabricated by him, through the invention of false events which he provided to the site owner for publication.
– The false statements made by the suspect to the website, including the claim that the deceased’s mother had died, whereas she is still alive.
– These acts constitute crimes punishable under the Penal Code. Consequently, the suspect was referred to the public prosecution, which, considering the seriousness of the committed acts, referred him to the court in custody. On July 14, 2025, the court issued a judgment convicting him of the charges against him and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment and a fine of 50,000 dirhams.
This ruling underscores the judiciary’s commitment to protecting the truth and the community’s responsibility in confronting false claims that damage reputations and cause turmoil around sensitive matters.
