The Moroccan Democratic Civil Council for Migration and all its partners from diaspora civil society organizations follow with deep sorrow and concern the tragic events in the regions of Torrevieja and Murcia in Spain, where many members of the Moroccan community were subjected to physical violence and verbal racist attacks. These incidents are part of a systematic campaign amounting to collective punishment led by far-right groups that exploit every minor incident to showcase their racist ideas and hateful rhetoric against foreigners, particularly Moroccans.
These events were triggered by an assault on a Spanish citizen by some Moroccan youth. The Council hereby strongly condemns this unacceptable assault and expresses sincere condolences and solidarity with the victim and his family, hoping that the Spanish justice system will act fairly to restore the victim’s dignity.
The Council calls on Spanish security and judicial authorities to intervene promptly to protect the safety and security of the Moroccan community and their property, reassuring them amid these threats, incitement, and violence.
Furthermore, it appeals to all democratic forces, political activists, human rights defenders, and civil society organizations in Spain to use all legal means to put an end to these attacks targeting the Moroccan community as a form of collective punishment by far-right groups.
The Council also urges Moroccan authorities to take all necessary political and diplomatic measures, within the framework of bilateral agreements between Morocco and Spain, to safeguard the community’s members and ensure their safety.
Finally, the Council issues a fraternal call to all actors, individuals, and associations from Moroccans inside and outside the country to express their support and solidarity with their brothers and sisters in Spain facing these assaults, threats, and intimidation.
