Dangerous Network Specializing in Fraud and Extortion Dismantled in Sidi Harazem

In a move to combat crimes affecting local security and negatively impacting residents and visitors, the Territorial Gendarmerie Unit of Sidi Harazem, under the Fès brigade, arrested five individuals on Saturday suspected of belonging to a criminal network involved in fraud and extortion.

According to local sources, the suspects illegally occupied public spaces, converting them into unauthorized informal parking lots. They exploited the influx of visitors to the Sidi Harazem resort—one of the prominent tourist destinations near the city of Fès—to extort car owners by imposing unlawful fees, thereby generating illicit profits.

The Gendarmerie has launched investigations under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, which ordered formal interrogations of the detainees. The suspects were temporarily released pending their referral to the competent court to take appropriate legal measures.

This operation follows a series of complaints filed by citizens, particularly amid a rise in crimes related to extortion and violations of public property in the tourist areas surrounding Fès.

Similar incidents occasionally occur in Fès, underscoring the need for continuous security vigilance and enhanced coordination among various authorities to curb these phenomena and ensure a safe environment for both residents and visitors, especially in busy tourist areas like Sidi Harazem.
