On Thursday, the Republic of Guatemala affirmed that Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative represents “the only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for moving forward towards a lasting agreement to resolve the manufactured conflict over Western Sahara, with full respect for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
This position was expressed by Guatemala’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ramiro Martínez Alvarado, during a press briefing held in Rabat following his meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
The Guatemalan Foreign Minister also expressed his country’s full support for Morocco’s efforts to reach a political, realistic, practical, durable, and mutually acceptable solution to this regional dispute.
Both Morocco and Guatemala reaffirmed their commitment to the inviolability of the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It is noteworthy that Guatemala was the first Latin American country to open a General Consulate in the city of Dakhla, Western Sahara, in December 2022, a symbolic move reflecting its ongoing support for Morocco’s territorial unity.
