Britain Has Not Yet Classified the Polisario Front as a Terrorist Organization Despite Political and Media Pressure

Amid escalating controversy over the nature of the Polisario Front and its role in the Western Sahara conflict, a key question arises: Will Britain follow the United States in designating the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization? According to reports by the British newspaper Daily Telegraph, there have been increasing calls within British political and media circles to adopt this classification. However, as of July 1, 2025, the British government has not issued any official decision on the matter.

The Polisario Front is a political and military movement founded in 1973 that demands the independence of Western Sahara, a territory administered by Morocco since Spain’s withdrawal in 1975.

On July 1, 2025, the Daily Telegraph published an article calling on the British government to classify the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization, citing accusations of links to Iran and Hezbollah and involvement in armed attacks. Former Member of Parliament Liam Fox also advocated for this classification, comparing the Polisario Front to other Iran-backed terrorist groups.

In an official parliamentary response, the British government confirmed that it has not decided to designate the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization, emphasizing its support for UN-led efforts to reach a comprehensive political solution to the Western Sahara dispute. The government stated that reviews of banned organizations are conducted through rigorous procedures without disclosing specific details.

By contrast, U.S. lawmakers introduced a bill in April 2025 to designate the Polisario Front as a foreign terrorist organization, based on allegations of connections to Iran and Russia and threats to U.S. interests. This reflects a tougher stance toward the movement compared to the British position.

Despite growing calls in Britain to classify the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization, the British government remains cautious, preferring to support political solutions through the United Nations. With ongoing political and media pressure, the British stance may evolve in the future, but as of July 1, 2025, there is no clear indication of concrete steps in this direction. The Polisario issue remains one of the most complex and sensitive topics in international politics, with fundamentally divergent assessments and positions.
