The Spanish National Police in Granada announced on Tuesday the arrest of two Moroccan nationals suspected of involvement in a case related to facilitating illegal immigration and abandoning a 17-year-old minor. The minor was transported from Morocco to Spain through unauthorized means.
According to an official statement by Spanish security authorities, one of the detainees is the minor’s uncle, while the other is a family friend. The two allegedly conspired to stage a scenario in which the minor appeared lost on the streets of Granada, then voluntarily handed him over to police authorities. This was reportedly done to gain access for the minor to an Andalusian government-run youth shelter.
The incident dates back several weeks, when the uncle transported the minor by sea from Morocco to a neighboring province, where the minor stayed for a few days. Subsequently, the uncle coordinated with another individual to transfer the minor to Granada and simulate his lost condition to facilitate his entry into the social care system and later benefit from family reunification procedures.
During the administrative process, the minor was temporarily placed in a social care institution. Investigations revealed the pre-arranged plan to illegally integrate the minor into the Spanish social system despite parental consent, as the parents reside in Morocco.
The two suspects have been charged with abandonment of a minor and facilitating illegal immigration. They are currently released pending a judicial hearing.
