Fire Destroys Nearly 40 Shops at “Chtiba” Market in Casablanca

A violent fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, June 25, at the popular “Chtiba” market located in the Moulay Rachid district of Casablanca. Although no casualties were reported, the flames caused significant material damage.

The fire reportedly started in an area dedicated to the sale of fruits, vegetables, olives, and similar products, destroying nearly 40 shops before firefighters quickly arrived and brought the blaze under control. Their rapid intervention helped contain the fire and prevented it from spreading throughout the entire market.

A substantial security presence was deployed around the site to support rescue operations and ensure the safety of the area. Meanwhile, the judicial police launched an investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office to determine the exact cause of the fire.

According to some sources, the fire may have been caused by a spark from a welding device used by a metalworker performing repair work in one of the stalls, which ignited the flames.

This incident is part of a series of fires recorded in several Moroccan cities over the past 24 hours, including Tetouan, Chefchaouen, and Casablanca, all of which have been successfully contained by authorities.

The fire serves as a reminder of the importance of enhancing safety measures in popular markets, especially those housing numerous small and diverse shops, to protect lives, safeguard property, and ensure the continuity of commercial activities.
