Spanish Journalist Patricia Juiz: How My Conviction Shifted from Supporting the Polisario to Exposing Their Harsh Reality

Spanish journalist Patricia Juiz revealed that she experienced a period of misinformation due to fake images and news materials about Morocco that were circulated by supporters of the Polisario Front.

Juiz highlighted that she ultimately decided to verify these reports herself, which often described the southern provinces of Morocco as closed military zones inaccessible to outsiders, with the Laayoune airport portrayed as a silent military base.

On Saturday, June 21, during a presentation at the scientific seminar on the integration of quality journalism and media education organized by the National Press Council in Dakhla, Juiz shared her personal experience.

She explained that she visited Morocco’s southern provinces as an ordinary tourist, and there she encountered a surprising reality. Juiz discovered that she had been somewhat a victim of misleading ideas. She said, “I expected the driver to be like the intelligence officer who accompanied me during my previous visit to Tindouf, where I was assigned a driver from the intelligence services who only took me to pre-approved locations. But in Laayoune, things were very normal, and I found myself immersed in a Moroccan wedding celebration lasting three days, which allowed me to meet and talk with many locals.”

Juiz compared her experiences in Morocco and Tindouf and realized a new reality, which motivated her to produce a documentary titled From Tindouf to Laayoune, aiming to reveal the truth and refute the many distortions and fabrications.

She disclosed that in Laayoune, life is normal and peaceful, with shops operating as usual and residents having ample access to water and food. This contrasts sharply with the population trapped in the Tindouf camps, who suffer from shortages of food and water and complain about the deprivation of European humanitarian aid, most of which is seized by the Polisario leadership to control and oppress the people.

Even essential medicines become commodities exploited by Polisario militias.

Juiz emphasized that the identity of Sahrawis cannot be monopolized solely by those in Tindouf but belongs equally to the people living in Morocco’s southern provinces.

Her testimony sheds light on the stark differences between the realities in Moroccan-administered territories and the Polisario-controlled camps, challenging many prevailing narratives.
