The French Senate, through its Special Envoy for International Relations Christian Cambon, has renewed its strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. Cambon emphasized that France’s official position recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces. Speaking from Rabat during a meeting between a delegation of the French Parliament and the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, he stressed that “autonomy is the only realistic solution” to end the conflict.
Cambon also expressed Paris’s rejection of being drawn into a “vicious cycle of repeated provocations,” referring to tensions caused by Algeria’s opposition to France’s support for Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara. He called on Algeria to prioritize dialogue and cooperation with Morocco, noting that “understanding between the two countries could make them a major African power.”
He added that France is keen to maintain a message of peace and avoid escalation, despite what he described as the “consequences of the French decision.” Cambon highlighted the crucial role of “parliamentary diplomacy” in supporting Morocco on the international stage, particularly in promoting the autonomy proposal as a fair and realistic option to achieve peace and stability in the region.
Cambon underscored that France’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara is neither a personal nor partisan stance but has become the official position of the French Republic, both now and in the future, reflecting France’s firm commitment to Morocco’s territorial integrity.
