Sefrou –
Civil society actors in Sefrou Province have issued an urgent appeal to the newly appointed governor, Mr. Brahim Abouzeid, calling for immediate intervention to rescue residents of several rural communes and centers from ongoing developmental neglect and the continuous decline in essential services, particularly in health, infrastructure, and employment opportunities.
These actors highlighted that the health situation in the region has become “catastrophic,” with an almost complete absence of medical services, a significant shortage of human resources and equipment, exacerbating the suffering of patients, especially in remote areas.
They also noted a severe deterioration in the road network, particularly Regional Road No. 504 connecting Sefrou to El Menzel, which is plagued by potholes and significant wear, hindering traffic flow and endangering road users. Additionally, residents suffer from a scarcity of drinking water in several villages and the high cost of communal ambulance services, depriving many families of their right to adequate medical transportation.
The actors pointed out the lack of school transportation means, negatively affecting students’ education, especially in remote villages, and called for urgent reinforcement of this sector.
In terms of environmental and safety concerns, they demanded the establishment of a civil protection unit, given the forested and mountainous nature of the area, along with the opening of access routes to forests and the banks of the Sebou River to address potential emergencies such as fires or natural disasters.
The demands also included developing the region’s tourism sector by creating recreational spaces around Ain Sebou and the riverbanks, and constructing mountain tourism facilities on Mount Bou Iblane, which would generate job opportunities and stimulate the local economy.
Furthermore, the civil society actors renewed their call for the establishment of a vocational training institution to accommodate the region’s youth and provide them with professional training and qualification, in light of the absence of effective educational and vocational alternatives.
Among the urgent demands is the acceleration of the opening of the Lghrousat Mosque to worshippers and the restoration of the Grand Mosque in El Menzel, given their religious and social significance. They also called for benefiting from irrigation water from nearby dams to enhance local agricultural activities.
The civil society actors concluded their appeal by emphasizing the need to establish industrial facilities in the province capable of creating permanent job opportunities and reducing the escalating unemployment among youth.
