Algiers, Algeria – Algeria has strongly denounced the United Kingdom’s new position on the Western Sahara issue, in which London declared the Moroccan autonomy plan as “the most credible, realistic, and practical basis for a lasting settlement to the regional dispute.” Algeria described this stance as a “violation of international law” and an attempt to “impose a colonial fait accompli,” even as international indicators point to increasing support for the Moroccan position and the autonomy initiative.
British Stance “Does Not Reflect the Truth” Amidst Growing International Support
Algeria’s denunciation came in a “statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs” published on Sunday, June 1, 2025 (Greenwich Mean Time). The statement expressed Algeria’s regret over the United Kingdom’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan, noting that “this proposal, throughout the eighteen years since its submission, has not been presented to the Sahrawis as a basis for negotiation, nor has it been seriously considered by UN envoys who have served in this position.”

The statement added that all UN envoys have affirmed that “the Moroccan initiative is hollow and incapable of contributing to a serious and credible settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara.”
This Algerian position comes at a time when the Moroccan Sahara issue is witnessing a remarkable diplomatic shift, with the Moroccan autonomy initiative gaining increasing support internationally and in the West. Reports indicate that three out of five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (the United States, France, and the United Kingdom) now support the Moroccan plan as a “serious, realistic, and credible” solution. The initiative is also gaining increasing momentum in Africa, Europe, and even Latin America, which was historically known for its pro-Polisario stances.
Accusations of “Violation of Law and Exceeding UN Powers”
The Algerian Foreign Ministry stressed that this British position “cannot in any way serve as a basis for a political solution to this conflict.” It asserted that “the true reality always lies in maintaining the status quo to obstruct any serious efforts to reach a genuine settlement, allowing Morocco to gain more time and gradually solidify international recognition of the colonial fait accompli of its illegal occupation of Western Sahara.”
Algeria strongly criticized the United Kingdom’s indication that “UK Export Finance may consider supporting projects in the Sahara,” deeming it “incompatible with international law.”
Call for Respect of International Law and Self-Determination
In concluding its statement, Algeria reiterated that the United Kingdom “does not recognize Morocco as a key gateway for social and economic development in Africa” and reaffirmed its “commitment to strengthening cooperation with Morocco as a partner for growth across the continent,” according to the joint Moroccan-British statement.
Algeria called on the United Kingdom to abide by “respect for international law” and “the right of peoples to self-determination,” emphasizing that its “policy in the Security Council is always focused on international accountability, and on upholding international legitimacy, particularly the United Nations’ doctrine on decolonization.”
