Moroccan Autonomy Plan for Sahara Gains International Momentum: 3 Out of 5 Permanent UN Security Council Members Now Offer Support

Rabat, Morocco – The Moroccan Sahara issue is witnessing a significant diplomatic shift, as the Moroccan autonomy initiative now enjoys the support of 3 out of 5 permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. This development signals growing international recognition of Morocco’s plan as a serious and realistic solution to the regional dispute.

Growing International Support and Shifting Stances

This support from a majority of the permanent members of the Security Council (the United States, France, and the United Kingdom) is a strong indicator of a changing international perspective on the issue. While some of these countries previously maintained a more neutral stance, they are now openly declaring their support for the Moroccan proposal submitted in 2007.

In contrast, both Russia and China continue to maintain a neutral position on the conflict, having not explicitly declared their support or rejection of the autonomy initiative. Nevertheless, this neutrality does not diminish the significance of the support the initiative enjoys from other powers.

Expanding Support Across Continents

Support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative has not been limited to major powers only but has extended to various geographical regions, including the African continent, Europe, and even South America, which was historically known for its pro-Polisario stances.

This expansion in the support base reflects a growing international conviction that the autonomy initiative is the most effective and realistic solution to end this protracted conflict, which hinders development and stability in the region. This momentum is also attributed to continuous Moroccan diplomatic efforts to explain the initiative’s dimensions and clarify its commitment to a peaceful and lasting resolution.
