Recent “covert” construction activities along the Ain Chkef road in Fez have sparked widespread outrage among residents, after the sudden removal of a vital green area. Locals have raised serious concerns over the lack of transparency surrounding the works and have vowed to take legal action should the green space—described as a “lung” of the city—be permanently destroyed.
These operations have reportedly begun without any official signage, announcement, or clarification regarding the identity of the developer or the technical purpose of the project. This secrecy has only intensified public frustration and suspicion.
Residents express their fears over the fate of the area, uncertain whether the works are part of a renovation or signal its complete elimination. Many have denounced the total absence of communication, despite the fact that the works are clearly visible and ongoing.
In a statement to Fes News Media, the owner of a well-known café in the area said he had invested in the property based on the presence of this green space, warning: “If it’s destroyed, we will go to court.” This reflects broader fears that the project could negatively affect property values and the quality of life for residents.
Local citizens are calling on the relevant authorities to urgently disclose the nature of the project and clarify the future of the green area to prevent further escalation or a potential legal battle.
