Kenya Backs Moroccan Autonomy Plan for Sahara, Deems it the Only Sustainable Solution

In a significant diplomatic move, the Republic of Kenya has declared its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as “the only sustainable approach” to settling the Moroccan Sahara issue. This announcement came after a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and1 his Kenyan counterpart, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, today, Monday, in Rabat.

Kenya’s new stance was articulated in a joint statement, in which both parties underscored the importance of this initiative. The statement affirmed that Kenya “considers the autonomy plan as the only sustainable approach to settling the Sahara issue, and intends to cooperate with countries that share the same vision to implement this plan.”

Kenya also lauded in its statement “the growing international consensus and the dynamism led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI supporting the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco, as the only realistic, credible, and practical solution to settling this dispute over the Sahara.”

In this context, both officials emphasized “the exclusive oversight of the United Nations over the UN political process,” and reiterated their support for the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 (2024).

The joint statement concluded by stating that the Kingdom of Morocco “expresses its appreciation for Kenya’s recognition of Morocco’s continuous cooperation with the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, in order to advance the political process based on the relevant Security Council resolutions.” This diplomatic development reflects a strengthening of Morocco’s international position on the Sahara issue and underscores the growing international support for its initiative aimed at resolving the regional dispute.
