The Digital Content Observatory has raised alarm over the growing threat of digital incitement in Morocco, warning that online platforms have increasingly become fertile ground for the spread of hate speech and calls for violence. With the rapid expansion of internet access and social media use, the Observatory stressed the urgent need for action to counter this phenomenon, which poses a real threat to societal stability and national security.
The Observatory noted a significant rise in the exploitation of digital spaces for incitement, through the circulation of content that promotes division among social groups or targets state symbols — including the monarchy — which it described as a serious violation of both legal and ethical norms that should govern online discourse.
The manifestations of incitement, according to the report, vary and include extremist posts on social networks, videos, and articles that promote or encourage violence. Certain groups, it warned, are leveraging the anonymity offered by the internet to disseminate such provocative messages.
Moreover, the Observatory drew attention to the increasing complexity of the issue, particularly with the rise of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, which allow the spread of incendiary content more widely and rapidly. This, it said, necessitates more advanced tools to confront the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
As one of the leading civil organizations monitoring and combating online incitement in Morocco, the Digital Content Observatory continues its efforts through awareness campaigns, ongoing monitoring, and coordination with relevant stakeholders, with the aim of creating a safer digital environment for all citizens.
In this context, the Observatory emphasized the importance of strengthening digital literacy, and encouraging the responsible use of technology to protect society from the increasing threats within cyberspace.
