The Committee on the Interior, Territorial Communities, Housing, Urban Policy, and Administrative Affairs in the House of Representatives unanimously approved, on Friday, Bill No. 14.25, which amends and supplements Law No. 47.06 related to the taxation of local authorities. The session was attended by Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit.
During a previous committee meeting held on Tuesday, Laftit expressed strong support for municipal presidents, praising their roles despite limited resources. The minister explained that local elected officials bear significant responsibilities in managing public affairs and that some of them face pressures and even blackmail.
Laftit affirmed that the Ministry of the Interior will not abandon any municipal president who feels wronged, noting that the courts are open to them and that the ministry is prepared to appoint legal counsel to defend them when necessary.
The minister considered that much of the criticism directed at municipal presidents often falls within the scope of political one-upmanship. He emphasized that democracy cannot function properly without the involvement of local elected officials, whose work he described as “significant and appreciated.”
