A joint security operation between the national police and customs services led to the foiling of an international drug smuggling attempt at the Karkarat border crossing, south of the city of Dakhla, on Friday, May 2nd. A massive shipment of hashish, estimated to weigh two tons, was seized.
Border inspection officers, supported by trained police dogs, were able to uncover the illicit shipment, which was carefully hidden amidst a load of construction materials on two trucks with Moroccan license plates. The trucks were heading towards a sub-Saharan African country. The drivers of the trucks, aged 40 and 47, were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the operation.
A preliminary investigation has been opened under the supervision of the competent public prosecution to determine all the circumstances and details of the case, as well as to identify the other potential individuals involved, with a focus on the extent of this criminal network at both the national and international levels.
This operation is part of an ongoing security strategy aimed at combating international drug smuggling networks and strengthening border crossing controls, especially at the Karkarat crossing, in the fight against various forms of transnational crime.
