“Between the Hammer of Tradition and the Anvil of Embarrassment” — Turmoil in Parliament Over Minister Answering Deputies’ Questions While Seated (+Video)

A heated debate broke out during a House of Representatives session last Monday, after Minister Fatima-Zahra Mansouri responded to questions from MPs while seated—an unusual move that prompted the session chair to intervene and request clarification on her behavior.

The minister explained that her action was due to specific health conditions, citing a medical recommendation that prevents her from standing and sitting repeatedly because of knee issues. During her intervention, she stated: “I pray while seated on my doctor’s advice. My respect for the legislative institution is beyond question—I come from within these institutions before joining the executive branch.”

For his part, the session chair described the incident as an “embarrassing situation for the presidency,” noting that it placed the institution “between the hammer of tradition and the anvil of health constraints.”
