French Official Urges Macron to Designate Polisario a Terrorist Organization

Paris: Pierre-Henri Dumont, former member of the French National Assembly and Deputy Secretary-General of the Les Républicains party, has called on President Emmanuel Macron to adopt a firm stance against the Polisario Front, an entity supported by Algeria and accused of collusion with Iran and Hezbollah.

This call comes as the debate intensifies in the United States regarding the necessity of designating the separatist front as a terrorist organization, a sentiment now finding resonance in Europe. Dumont, who is also the Deputy Mayor of Marck and Vice-President of the Grand Calais region, stated on the X platform: “The Hudson Institute provides new insights into the Polisario. Used by both Algeria and Iran, and allied with Hezbollah, this movement threatens regional peace and security. France must call things by their name: the Polisario is a terrorist organization.”

Dumont’s position follows a similar declaration by U.S. Republican Senator Joe Wilson, who announced his intention to introduce legislation to designate Polisario a terrorist organization. In a recent tweet, Wilson stated, “Authentic autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution for the Sahara. Iran and Putin are using Polisario to establish a foothold in Africa. Connecting the dots: the Axis of Aggression.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also reaffirmed U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over its Sahara, solidifying the U.S. position already formalized in 2020 by President Donald Trump.

These calls occur within a context where the United States has recently reiterated its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and emphasized the importance of achieving a political solution based on autonomy. Lisa Kenna, a senior official at the U.S. State Department, also reiterated Washington’s call for the resumption of negotiations between the concerned parties, stressing that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty remains the only realistic and sustainable solution to the conflict.”
