Rabat: Details of Verdict Against Student Who Killed His Tutor

Rabat: The Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal in Rabat issued a verdict last Wednesday evening, sentencing a student in his twenties to 20 years of imprisonment. He was convicted of premeditated murder, with the victim being a man in his fifties, believed to be his former English language tutor.

News reports indicate that the court confronted the accused student with the results of the autopsy, which confirmed an assault, as well as his detailed confessions to the crime during police questioning. Despite this, the accused attempted to justify his actions in court by claiming self-defense after an alleged attempted rape. He claimed the victim would drug him and sexually assault him, insisting he did not intend to kill him and that his actions were solely in self-defense, only to find the tutor dead beside him in a room at the victim’s home, where he received English lessons.

The case unfolded in June of last year when security services recorded a gruesome murder in the Kariema neighborhood of Salé. The victim was a former English language teacher, and the accused was a student in his early twenties from Rabat who frequented the victim’s home in Salé for English tutoring to prepare for professional job entrance exams.

Investigations conducted by the Regional Judicial Police Department in Salé revealed that the accused, according to his statements, had grown weary of what he described as the victim’s “deviant practices.” He claimed the tutor would give him a sedative drink and then sexually assault him. After the tutor allegedly spread the news among the accused’s peers, the student pretended to be asleep one evening after a lesson, while alone with the tutor in his Salé home. This prompted the tutor to attempt sexual assault, at which point the student struck him hard on the head, denying any intent to kill. The accused reportedly considered dismembering the body before leaving it in the room and returning to his family’s home in Rabat, where police apprehended him following investigations by the Directorate General for Territorial Surveillance, which successfully located him.

Residents in Salé had alerted the police to foul odors emanating from the victim’s home. Upon searching the residence, the decomposing body was discovered. The public prosecutor ordered an autopsy to determine the circumstances of death, which subsequently revealed a connection to murder and sexual deviancy. The accused student was arrested, subjected to preliminary and detailed investigations, culminating in his conviction and the 20-year prison sentence last Wednesday evening.
